Mount Marathon no longer has a medical deferral process (except for pregnancy or childbirth).
SKIP-A-YEAR is therefore the only way to retain priority status for the following year — but it is only available ONCE in a racing lifetime.
Racers with priority registration status for the 2025 race (who do not have 10-year status) and will not be racing (injury, family issue, or any other reason) need to:
(1) register and pay the entry fee between March 1-31 AND
(2) submit a Skip-a-Year form below to obtain priority registration for the 2026 race. No documentation or reason is required. (You must still register and pay the full registration fee to claim your spot in 2026).
***If at all possible, please apply for Skip-A-Year BEFORE APRIL 1 so that your spot can be distributed to another runner through the lottery. If you apply after April 1, your bib will go unused for that year.
Other details:
- Racers who are registered for 2025 and decide after April 1 that they will not be racing may submit a Skip-a-Year request using the form below to obtain priority registration for the 2026 race.
- Skip-A-Year is only available to those who register during the March 1-31 registration period. It can be selected between March 1-July 3, but racers are asked to apply as soon as they know to ease the administrative burden.
- Skip-A-Year is NOT available to lottery entrants during the March registration period. It is also not available to those who lose the lottery. However, it is available to lottery winners who have paid the full registration fee.
- Once selected, Skip-A-Year cannot be rescinded if a racers’ plans change.
- Skip-a-Year racers are recognized as a priority registrants the following year using the normal registration process, which includes paying the full registration fee between March 1-31. Because you are filling a race spot for both 2025 and 2026, you are required to pay for both years.
Who does NOT need to apply for Skip-A-Year?
- Racers with 10-year status who decide not to race (injury, family issue, or any other reason) should not register and do not need to complete a Skip-A-Year application. This is because 10-year status racers always have priority registration — so there is no need to hold their spot by using Skip-A-Year.
- Race champions because have complimentary priority entry for life so Skip-A-Year is unnecesary.
- Junior racers from Seward are guaranteed lottery winners so do not need to hold their spot through Skip-A-Year.
