Bib and wave assignments for 2025 are now posted here: https://mountmarathon.com/2025-race-roster/
In 2022, organizers implemented a three-wave system for men and women. Each wave starts three minutes apart. Each wave includes about 125 entrants (but fewer actual racers due to attrition).
The primary seeding mechanism for adult racers is the prior year’s Mount Marathon results. Those who did not race the previous year but finished Mount Marathon in recent years will have those results considered. First-time racers are seeded in Wave 3 unless they have credentials that warrant being placed in Wave 1 or Wave 2; credentials must be listed when prompted on the entry form.
Wave 1 for the men and women each year include the following:
- The top 100 men and top 100 women finishers from the previous year’s race (those are guaranteed; the number could land higher than 100th).
- Top returning racers who used Skip-A-Year in 2024.
- Top junior racers aging in to the senior race.
- AMR Grand Prix winners with Earned Race Spots.
- First-time lottery winners with very strong credentials.
- Those gaining entry via petitioners, auction, raffle, sponsors, or Committee’s Choice with very strong credentials.
Wave 2 is guaranteed for those who place among the Top 200 in their race.
2025 Wave 1 — Bibs 1-128 for men and women. Top 100 men and Top 109 women from MMR 2024, plus other racers with strong credentials. All Top 100 finishers from 2024 were assigned the bib number corresponding to their place (i.e. 93rd place in 2024 equals Bib 93 in 2025).
2025 Wave 2 — Bibs 201-330 for men and women. MMR racers from 2024 and 2023 who placed in the middle third, and first-time racers with previous results indicating a finish in the middle of the pack. Men in 2024 who placed 101st to 227th and women who placed 110th to 200th landed in Wave 2 in 2025.
2025 Wave 3 — Bibs 401-533 for men and women. MMR racers from 2024 and 2023 who placed in the bottom third, first-time racers whose previous results indicate a finish in the back third, and first-time racers who listed no credentials. Men in 2024 who placed 228th to 311th and women who placed 203rd to 282nd landed in Wave 3 in 2025.
Juniors — A combined mass start for all boys and girls, and self-seeding in the start corral, means bib assignments carry less weight. Top juniors from previous years and first-timers expected to rank high generally received bibs 1-50 (boys) or 201-250 (girls).
Boys — Bibs 1-155
Girls — Bibs 201-350
Non-binary division participants are placed in the race of the gender they selected on their registration form and in a wave that corresponds to their credentials.
Online auction winners bibs are based on their Mount Marathon and other experience.
Live auction winners and the raffle winner bibs are based on their Mount Marathon results and other experience.
WAVE CHANGE REQUESTS FOR 2025 — The deadline for wave change requests was May 23, 2025. Wave change requests are no longer possible.
No junior wave requests will be considered because there is only one combined wave.
The race director will consider each adult wave change request and decide whether an adjustment is warranted. Generally first-timers who failed to list credentials at registration have better success obtaining a wave change as opposed to those who raced Mount Marathon in 2024 or 2023 and dispute their wave placing based on that result.
To limit future change requests, first-time racers should list their credentials when they register for the lottery.
